Rendering with light domes

The process for setting up a dome light within Autodesk Maya is as follows:

  1. Go to "Window > Rendering > Render Settings".
  2. At the top find the "Render using" drop down and select "mental ray".
  3. disable "Enable Default Light" under "render options"
  4. Click the "indirect lighting" tab.
  5. Click the "create" button next to "image based lighting"
  6. You want to turn on "final gather" under features.
  7. You may also just be able to enable a high quality preset under the presets dropdown menu option.
  8. Click the probe and click the folder icon on the first section to choose the image to use for the light dome.

turn on "emit light" in ibl node?

Changing the default render setup to "mental ray daylight high" is a quick way to preview the GI setup.
